That’s where Vestas’ Smoke and Heat Detection system (SHDS) comes in. SHDS is a failsafe, highly effective way to minimise the risks of fire in a turbine. SHDS comprises a detection system that: · Senses a fire at its earliest stage · Shuts down the turbine and all electrical components · Prevents the fire from spreading and causing damage Sensors in the nacelle monitor both smoke and heat. If the sensors are activated, a controller unit halts the turbines, raises the alarm and logs the incident via the SCADA system. By shutting down the turbine and switchgear, extinguishing can begin immediately and a fire can be prevented before it has even begun. Safe: The system uses industry approved detectors, beacons and alarms Robust: Three types of detectors – arc, aspiration and point – with multiple sensor types combining to identify potential fires as early as possible, and cross-checking mechanisms to avoid false alarms. Through in depth investigation and analysis, we have identified which parts of the turbine are most at risk of fire – so the SHDS is concentrated in the converter and electrical control cabinets, mechanical parking brake, transformer compartment and generator.
