Fire Suppression Upgrade Solutions Available fire suppression solutions designed to protect service technicians against thermal events while decreasing the risk of irreparable turbine damage or extended downtime Preparing for the unexpected Fire hazard incidents are very rare, but their implications can potentially be severe: Service technicians can be exposed to dangerous thermal events and an incident can significantly disrupt the operation of a wind turbine. To increase safety and improve business-case certainty, Vestas offers a full suite of fire suppression upgrade solutions, installation and maintenance across most turbine brands and platforms. The three categories include fire suppression blankets, canisters, and tubular systems. Fire Suppression Blankets Fire blankets are made from highly flame-resistant layers of woven glass fiber fabric with an inner layer of fire-retardant film. They can be used to manually extinguish small fires. Fire blankets remove the oxygen supply that a fire needs to burn and smothers the fire. They are a versatile accessory and simply installed by mounting on a flat surface inside the turbine, in a position which is both visible and accessible. Having fire blankets installed throughout the turbine makes it easy for service technicians to quickly extinguish a small fire. Canister Solution The canister fire suppression solution uses hermetically sealed steel cannisters that are modular in size. They are designed to fit into all the high-risk component areas of the wind turbine, including the gearbox, generator, transformer, hydraulic systems, brake, controller cabinet, and switchgear. Fire suppression canisters can be integrated with a variety of fire detection systems, or as thermally operated units requiring no external power source. The canisters offer automatic protection by discharging ultra-fine particles and propelled inert gasses that effectively extinguish fires. The extinguishing agent causes no damaging or harmful byproducts and is therefore safe for service technicians, while keeping downtime to a minimum.
