VELUX RAISE YOUR MANAGERS’ SKILLS AND GET BETTER RESULTS THE CHALLENGE VELUX, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of skylights and roof windows, found that many of the group’s managers within the administrative areas could benefit from having greater insight into operations management. The group wanted to raise these managers’ awareness of – and overall competences within – operations management, and also wanted to have common tools and a common language for operations management. Finally, VELUX wanted strong, firm operations management processes to support their day-to-day efforts aimed at achieving operational excellence. THE SOLUTION With the help of Valcon, VELUX developed a programme through which operations management tools, tasks, and processes were defined. Subsequently, Valcon facilitated four workshops for management teams within the administrative areas in VELUX (e.g. logistics, finance, marketing, etc). In these workshops the management teams were trained in and practiced the use of operations management tools, tasks and processes. Between the workshops the managers had assignments to implement operations management tools and processes. As part of the programme the managers were offered support for these assignments. The programme included common process definitions, implementation of operational key performance indicators, and implementation of common routines for performance follow-up, problem-solving techniques and training in general principles of good operations management behaviour. THE RESULTS The process is still ongoing, but VELUX is already beginning to enjoy a greater level of management insights into – and practical experience with – how to create better business by means of firm targets and operations management routines. Now, managers and employees carry out very specific, down-to-earth improvements to processes within their own organisation, and they can all see and monitor the results achieved at regular meetings. What is more, the company culture is being boosted through systematic creation of continuous improvements on a day-to-day basis.
