STATENS SERUM INSTITUT A CLEAR OVERVIEW BROUGHT EVERYONE BACK ON TRACK THE CHALLENGE How do you make sure everyone knows what they are supposed to do? That was a challenge for Statens Serum Institut (SSI). The company consists of many different units, and its employees solve many different and complex tasks. Those employees had experienced a lack of transparency for some time, and their confusion was quite understandable: At SSI, some units work with production, others carry out research, while still others carry out administrative tasks, service tasks, or information activities. The challenge was to give the 1,200 people working for SSI a clearer view of the overall strategy and specific targets for their individual units. THE SOLUTION Together, SSI and Valcon developed a tool that translates the company’s strategy into concrete, measurable tasks for all units. Quite simply, the employees of three selected units meet regularly around a simple performance board – a very down-to-earth tool where all targets and results are listed. The meetings can take anything from 15 minutes to an hour depending on requirements, and provide all participants with a common overview of the current status of each unit’s operation – and its development trends. The performance board breaks down the overall strategy into specific, measurable key performance indicators (KPIs) for the various units and tasks. These KPIs are all firmly anchored in individual teams, employees, and organisational units, because one thing is crucial: the KPIs must make sense to everyone. Thanks to the employees’ direct involvement in the process, they do. THE RESULTS The KPIs now form the basis for day-to-day-operations – and, very importantly, for the continuous improvement efforts. They have made the strategies and goals far more transparent to management and employees alike, and this has led to better productivity and, of course, a better alignment between strategy and operations. Everyone now has a specific framework they can use to check if they are on the right track – and moving along at the right speed.
