Legal requirements are region specific, but most solutions provide unnecessary, continuous lighting. OCAS® is an innovative solution that activates the lights when an aircraft is operating in the immediate vicinity of the wind farm. This minimises the visual impact and opens up new commercial opportunities for sites with regulatory lighting restrictions – with potentially taller, higher-yielding turbine heights. Your benefits at a glance: OCAS® is a reliable, highly evolved technology, enabling you to overcome the challenges that you may experience when building a wind power plant. · Faster approval times through greater community acceptance of wind farms · New commercial opportunities by opening up sites with regulatory lighting restrictions · Increased ROI through higher-yielding turbine heights Understanding how the system works The main feature of OCAS® is the powerful, low-energy radar system sited at the wind power plant. The radar scans the surrounding area – with a target range of up to 5 km, covering up to 220° – for nearby aircraft. If an aircraft is detected, the radar tracks its heading, speed and altitude and gauges whether or not the system should trigger a warning to the incoming aircraft. If a warning is triggered, OCAS® automatically activates the primary visual warning by switching on all the wind power plant aviation lights. Optionally, a secondary warning can be applied to issue an audio alarm directly to the pilot on an approved VHF frequency in the general aviation band. Once the aircraft has safely passed the activation area, the lights are automatically switched off again. In the unlikely event that the system experiences a failure, all aviation lights on the wind farm will be switched on. Product Availability: OCAS® can be applied to all Vestas turbine models. This may aid a faster permit process, so your wind energy project can be up and running sooner. · New commercial opportunities: Sites with regulatory lighting restrictions may now be open for development as wind energy plants. · Increased ROI: Reduced use of aviation lights enables taller, higher-yielding turbine heights. To keep you informed about OCAS® operations, a status report is provided quarterly. OCAS® is compatible with all Vestas turbine models and is suitable for almost any site onshore. It is easy to install and maintain. As an important safety device, the technology features remote monitoring and secondary radar power back-ups to support continual performance even in the event of system degradations or extended power outages. Contact us today to find out how OCAS® can decrease the visual impact of your wind farm, help you obtain permits faster and improve your returns by increasing your business case certainty. © 2012 Vestas Wind Systems A/S.
