Prevention – the best defence against fire We use a triple detector system for prompt warnings about trouble – before it flares. Arc detectors: These detect light glint from arc flashes within the nacelle. If sensed, the power source is tripped within 50 milliseconds. The turbine is instantly shut down and prepared for extinguishing. Multi-sensor point detectors: These contain two types of sensors in one detector – one reading smoke levels, the other heat. This reduces the number of false alarms by measuring both readings against pre-configured ratios. Aspiration detectors: These sample and characterise smoke levels to correctly diagnose the source. Smoke exists in a nacelle under several safe scenarios: from the transformer during heavy loads, for example, or from the mechanical brakes. The aspiration detectors ensure that no false alarms interrupt normal power production. Product Availability: SHDS is currently compatible with the 2 MW platform and the 3 MW platform. The circles indicate placement of the main fire detection sensors in the nacelle. © 2013 Vestas Wind Systems A/S. All rights reserved.
