Siting has to be taken into account when calculating the overall costs of harvesting the wind, including wear and tear on the turbines, and achieving the highest possible return on your investment in wind power. With SiteHunt®, Vestas can give unique insight into critical meteorological parameters relating to operating costs, ensuring that you benefit from a holistic cost-of-energy approach that increases your business case certainty. Reducing time to market A time to market reduction using SiteHunt® is achieved through desk-based analysis which can shorten your reaction time by prioritising sites through long term climatic data analysis, helping to zoom in on the sites that fits the most desirable characteristics. With the SiteHunt® analysis in hand, these studies can expedite the first round site selection process by more quickly identifying the most attractive site areas and rapidly designing an appropriate measurement campaign. Particularly in regions where there are not many existing wind power plants or detailed wind resource maps, the time savings are expected to be on the high end. SiteHunt® involves an exhaustive analysis that considers a wide range of factors that might have an effect on the suitability of a site and the performance of your wind power plant. Unique global database The SiteHunt® database holds a global record of hourly wind conditions in a global resolution grid ranging from 10m x 10m to 27km x 27km, starting from January 2000 and updated every day. Plant Siting and Forecasting You benefit from the industry’s largest community of siting engineers, located across 16 offices on 5 continents. Our Plant Siting and Forecasting team in Vestas’ Technology R&D centre includes highly trained specialists such as mathematicians, statisticians, meteorologists, computational fluid dynamics specialists and other experts dedicated to analysing and optimising wind power plant sites. Meteorological analysis SiteHunt® collates and analyses up-to-the-minute data gathered from state of the art atmospheric models combined with observations from more than 35,000 meteorological stations across the globe. Our database contains global long term data from as far back as January 2000. All data is tuned for wind power plant analyses, increasing your business case certainty. In addition, the SiteHunt process can assimilate operating data input from more than 18.000 wind turbines installed around the world. Computational Fluid Dynamics Information from our massive database of wind and weather data is used as input for sophisticated mathematical analyses. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations are performed to produce advanced wind flow models of the site and assess its long-term suitability. SiteHunt® deliverables SiteHunt® users receive a Wind Resource Map of a country/region of interest including long term climatic analysis of selected sites or areas, including icing and lightning risk. Also, seasonal and diurnal variability is included and map overlays of electrical grid, infrastructure and protected areas can be integrated as well. As an extended option, Vestas can furthermore conduct a microscale study of a selected site including indicative layouts, cost of energy considerations and recommendations for measurement campaign.
<a10:updated>2011-03-18T14:53:22+01:00</a10:updated>

Vestas Page 6

Your partner in planning Use CFD to model local topographical conditions The CFD software that we use for SiteHunt® was originally developed in the aerospace industry to analyse airflow around aircraft designs. CFD is a branch of fluid mechanics used to identify problems that involve flows in different types of situations, where highperformance supercomputers are employed to perform all the calculations necessary to accurately simulate actual conditions where any turbulent flow interacts with a surface. This makes it the ideal tool to model local topographical conditions and forecast winds at any given site being considered for the client’s wind power project. By using CFD, SiteHunt® estimates wind flow over the terrain and performs simulations showing turbulence at the actual wind turbine locations. We also carry out a Vestas Site Check simulation, that uses both the individual turbine wind parameters and the terrain conditions to decide if there is a match between the climatic conditions and the wind turbines’ design specifications. Leaving nothing to chance, the SiteHunt® analyses are of tremendous complexity and is configurable to many different inputs, including: · · · · · Weather and wind data Electrical grid locations Restrictions on land use Road systems Population centres SiteDesign® Once a suitable site location has been chosen, our SiteDesign® service allows you to assess and configure the site to maximise the output and value; the process is based on optimising the relationship between long term operational costs as well as the value of estimated energy production. It gives an accurate and reliable way to identify the most appropriate turbine type and the most suitable positions for individual turbines on the site. This makes SiteDesign® a crucial step in assessing the project’s potential – and reducing its overall cost of energy. Succeeding together Partnership is at the cornerstone of everything we do. This means we work closely with all our customers to help them achieve their commercial objectives and estimate the likely energy production from their proposed wind power project. We do this by providing customers with access to the vast accumulation of knowledge that comes from our three decades of experience in the industry; knowledge that is continually expanding as we participate in scientific research to lead the way in the evolution of new and more effective techniques. We have the world’s largest community of siting engineers and can offer expertise and advice on every aspect of locating, designing, optimising and operating a wind power plant. When the perfect site is located Electrical PreDesign Choosing the right site for your wind power plant – although of vital importance – is by no means the only consideration necessary to take a project forward from business plan to profitable operation. Other essential links in the project value chain include finding the optimum position and model of each individual turbine on the site, and then ensuring compliance with ever more complex grid connection requirements – both areas of Vestas expertise. Our Electrical PreDesign service is designed to help our customers deal with the increasing complexity of global grid connection requirements. We offer project-specific analysis explaining how your grid code requirements can be met in the most robust and cost effective manner, ensuring power plant grid compliance and thereby increasing the business case certainty of your investment in wind energy.
<a10:updated>2011-03-18T14:53:22+01:00</a10:updated>

Vestas Page 7

+35,000 SiteHunt® analyses data relating to operating conditions in all environments utilising long term observations from more than 35,000 meteorological stations across the world.
<a10:updated>2011-03-18T14:53:22+01:00</a10:updated>

Vestas Page 8

Vestas Wind Systems A/S Alsvej 21 . 8940 Randers SV .
