Optimise your business case certainty SiteDesign® optimizes the layout of your wind power plant, through a sophisticated analysis of lifetime energy costs for each turbine. This is achieved by striking the most effective balance between a layout that maximises expected revenue, and one that reduces estimated operating and maintenance costs based upon Vestas’ deep knowledge into turbine components and operating data from global wind power plants. Put simply, SiteDesign® finds the balance between the estimated ratio of annual revenue to operating costs. Vestas’ SiteDesign® enables you to assess the production and operating costs of a complex wind energy site over the long term, and configure the optimal location and operational strategy of individual turbines accordingly. SiteDesign® is a crucial step in determining a project’s true potential, and provides a much firmer basis for investment decisions. The difference is in the data SiteDesign® draws on our unique global database which covers millions of hours of operating data from real-time monitoring of over 18,000 wind turbines in more than 60 countries. This is complemented by long term data continuously gathered from internal atmospheric models utilising more than 35,000 meteorological stations across the globe. All of which is analysed by our dedicated global team of siting professionals – including meteorologists, statisticians, mathematicians, wind turbine engineers, business analysts and financial engineers. Using our in-house supercomputer, one of the most powerful in the industry, this team runs sophisticated software tools to generate an optimised plant layout that balances low cost of energy with maximum output. Calculating the total cost of energy It is a fact that even the smallest detail in siting a single turbine can affect the cost of energy for an entire wind power plant. So in order to make an accurate estimate of a project’s potential, SiteDesign® uses sophisticated computer modelling and simulated conditions based on extensive wind and site data analysis. We have developed the SiteDesign® process using our three decades of experience and the expertise gained from installing over 43,000 wind turbines throughout the world. This gives us a unique insight into critical factors such as design loads and operating costs – plus a greater accuracy in identifying the most appropriate turbine type for a particular site, and the most optimal position and operational strategy for each individual turbine. +18,000 SiteDesign® draws on operating data from real-time monitoring of over 18,000 wind turbines in more than 60 countries.
<a10:updated>2011-03-18T11:07:33+01:00</a10:updated>

Vestas Page 3

Let’s design your ideal wind site
<a10:updated>2011-03-18T11:07:33+01:00</a10:updated>

Vestas Page 4

Helping you harness the full power of complex wind energy sites The optimisation of a power plant layout is an intricate process that requires high quality data input, calculations, precise analysis and advanced computer modelling techniques. It is especially important when designing a layout for sites with complex terrain. The SiteDesign® study is based upon sophisticated studies using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software that models forest and other types of complex terrain at a very high level of detail. These simulations are superior to the industry standard linear flow models. We also have formalised tools for assessing the risk of icing and the related potential production loss. At each layer of the process, SiteDesign® has the capability to respond to every requirement by combining knowledge and experience, and applying the latest advances in CFD software. This delivers customer value through a number of key benefits. SiteDesign® benefits · Finds the optimal turbine location while balancing the estimated production output with maintenance costs · Specifies the optimum turbine layout for maximum efficiency · Increases business case certainty through site specific long term analysis · Helps optimise the financial performance of your wind power plant Cost of Energy Analysis More accurate forecasts of the total cost of generating electricity are provided, including both the capital expenses to build the power plant amortized over the life span of the power plant, and the operating and overhead expenses to keep the plant running.
<a10:updated>2011-03-18T11:07:33+01:00</a10:updated>

Vestas Page 5

Wind Resource Analysis On-site measurements are analysed using our purpose built software tools allowing for an unrivalled and unbiased analysis and estimate of the wind speeds and directions the site would be expected to experience over the turbine design life time. The long term wind regime is assessed using our validated wind library covering the onshore regions of the world in an unprecedented high resolution. Complexity Factors such as terrain complexity and wind from certain directions can influence the efficiency of your wind power plant. SiteDesign® takes account of this and other issues, including wind power plant geographic layout. Turbulence Turbulence can sometimes force lower-speed operation, or even shut down wind turbine generators. An analysis and estimate of the expected wind turbulence levels can help ensure your site is designed to minimise this risk. SiteDesign® takes this into account when optimising the layout for your wind power plant. Service Cost Assessment An assessment of the operational lifetime cost to service the wind power plant is conducted and is one of the parameters of the SiteDesign® analysis. This long term assessment is derived from using recordings in our massive performance databases which are linked to turbine specific climatic and operational conditions. Optimised Financial Performance SiteDesign® generates an operational index map of the wind power plant site, taking into account the estimation of both the projected annual revenue and the operational expenses associated with each grid point on the index map. Using this operational index map, the optimum site layout for Vestas’ wind turbines can be designed.
<a10:updated>2011-03-18T11:07:33+01:00</a10:updated>

Vestas Page 6

Your partner in planning Using CFD software to model local topographical conditions In order to optimise the layout of a wind power plant, SiteDesign® runs Computational Fluid Dynamics software on our powerful in-house supercomputer to perform simulations of the conditions on site and analyse their effects over the whole operating life of the plant. The CFD software that we use for SiteDesign® was originally developed in the aerospace industry to analyse airflow around aircraft designs. CFD is a branch of fluid mechanics used to identify problems that involve flows in different types of situations, where highperformance supercomputers are employed to perform all the calculations necessary to accurately simulate actual conditions where any turbulent flow interacts with a surface. This makes it the ideal tool to model local topographical conditions and forecast winds at any given site being considered for the client’s wind power project. By using CFD, SiteDesign® estimates wind flow over the terrain and performs simulations showing turbulence at the actual wind turbine locations. SiteDesign® offers the best possible project economics – through Vestas’ ‘best-in-class’ micro-siting and total cost of energy approach, which takes into account long term perspectives of both estimated energy production and operations and maintenance costs.
